I've always loved to dance.
Not professionally, and I've never needed to be good at it. There's just something about turning on good music, moving my body, and letting myself really feel it. It has always made me feel alive.
Then I found somatic dance, and dancing started to mean something different. I used to think of it as just fun. Now it's how I come back to myself, move through emotions, and let go of things I didn't even know my body was holding.
Honestly, it's been one of the most beautiful surprises of my healing journey.
What is somatic dance?
Somatic dance blends intuitive movement with somatic healing, which is all about the connection between your mind and your body.
There's no choreography and no worrying about how you look. You tune into your body, notice what it needs, and let the movement come on its own.
Sometimes that's swaying your hips. Sometimes it's shaking, stretching, reaching, or moving in ways you'd never normally let yourself. And sometimes it's crying.
Our emotions don't only live in our thoughts. They live in our bodies too.
They show up as tight shoulders, a heavy chest, a knot in your stomach, or that stuck feeling you can't quite explain. After years of pushing through, holding it all together, and keeping everyone else happy, it's easy to lose touch with what your body is trying to tell you.
Somatic movement gives you a chance to slow down, notice those sensations, and answer them with movement instead of trying to think your way through everything. It isn't about forcing a release. It's about making it safe to feel, move, and listen.
My experience with somatic dance
The first five or six times I took this class, I cried.
Not a polite little tear, either. Just moving my body brought up this immediate, incredible sense of release.
Something about the music and the movement, and letting myself feel without explaining any of it, opened something up. I didn't need the right words. I didn't need to analyze what I was feeling or figure out why.
I just needed to move.
I've spent a lot of time trying to understand myself, work through my emotions, and figure out my next step. So there was something really freeing about not having to figure anything out.

We can get so caught up in inner work that we forget healing doesn't always look like journaling, another book, or talking it through. Sometimes it looks like putting on your favorite song and letting your body lead. Shaking off the heaviness. Stretching your arms toward the sky. Crying without needing to know why. Or dancing just because it feels good.
That's what I love about somatic dance. It gets you out of your head and back into your body.
Somatic dance inside Inner Bloom
If you're curious to try it, we have the Somatics Dance Healing Workshop inside Inner Bloom, created by Michelle Joy.
It invites you to reconnect with your body, wake up your divine feminine energy, and use movement as a path to healing and embodiment. Instead of following steps, you move intuitively, reconnect with your sensuality, and let yourself take up space.
It's a chance to step out of all the thinking and doing, drop into your body, and see what it feels like to be fully present with yourself.
More from Michelle Joy
If somatic dance speaks to you, Michelle has two more classes inside Inner Bloom:
- Somatic Healing Movement explores the mind-body connection through movement. It helps you tune into physical sensations, build body awareness, and meet your emotions with more curiosity and compassion.
- Somatic Healing Meditation is a guided practice for slowing down and reconnecting with your body in a quieter, stiller way.
Michelle is a Divine Wealth Embodiment Coach, Somatic Dance Healing Teacher, Sacred Geometry Love Energy Healer, and Human Design for Business Mentor. She brings somatic practice, embodiment, movement, and feminine energy together to help women come home to themselves.
Her work is a good reminder that transformation isn't always about becoming someone new. Sometimes it's about returning to the parts of yourself you'd forgotten how to reach.
This one you have to feel
I can tell you about somatic dance. I can explain the mind-body connection. But this is one of those things you really have to feel to understand.
You don't have to be a dancer. You don't have to know what you're doing. You don't even have to understand what comes up. You just have to show up for yourself and give your body a little room to move.
If you're healing, going through a season of change, or just craving a deeper connection with yourself, give it a try. You might be surprised by what you find.
Sometimes the next step isn't learning one more thing. It's giving yourself permission to feel.

Common Questions
What is somatic dance?
Somatic dance blends intuitive movement with somatic healing, which focuses on the connection between the mind and body. There's no choreography. You tune into your body, notice what it needs, and let movement happen naturally, which can help release tension and stored emotion.
Is it normal to cry during somatic dance?
Yes. Many women feel a wave of emotion when they finally let their body move freely, because feelings we've held back often live in the body as tension. Go gently, pause whenever you need to, and reach out to a professional if what comes up feels like too much to hold on your own.
Do I need dance experience to try somatic dance?
Not at all. Somatic dance isn't about how you look or getting the steps right. It's about listening to your body and letting it move in whatever way feels good, so it's open to anyone, at any level.
